Even before the first note of Sabrina Carpenter’s new album Man’s Best Friend reached listeners’ ears, the cover art ignited a firestorm of debate.

In June, Carpenter unveiled artwork depicting herself on all fours, guided by a hand gripping her hair—an image that promptly drew accusations of misogyny and objectification. Yet the singer insists she never anticipated such uproar.

Speaking with Gayle King on CBS Mornings on August 29, Carpenter confessed she was taken aback by the backlash. “Among my friends and family—the first to see my work—it never even sparked a question,” she noted. “To us, it perfectly encapsulates the album’s themes.”

She added, “My core fans understand the context instantly. Those unfamiliar often ask, ‘Where are her parents?’ But my own parents saw it and loved it.”

Released the same day as the interview, Man’s Best Friend spans twelve tracks showcasing the playful, provocative lyricism that fueled her 2024 Billboard 200–topping album Short n’ Sweet. While the controversy around the primary cover subsided—especially after Carpenter shared a few more conservative alternatives—she’s long embraced unapologetic sensuality in her artistry.

On CBS Mornings, Carpenter revealed deeper layers to the imagery. “For me, it’s about owning agency—recognizing when you choose control and when you surrender it,” she explained. “As a young woman, you feel both those moments acutely. This record celebrates the humanity in making imperfect choices, even when you know they might backfire.”
