Ryan Reynolds has experienced a busy few years. He returned as Wade Wilson in Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Hugh Jackman. Before that, he appeared in the time-travel sci-fi adventure The Adam Project, the Christmas musical comedy Spirited with Will Ferrell, and numerous Mint Mobile commercials.

Reynolds has maintained a steady presence on the big screen despite his work as a phone spokesman. One of his newest movies is currently topping streaming charts and proving audience interest remains high.

Mayday is a new action comedy from the directors of Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. It premiered on Apple TV and quickly found an audience, ranking as the No. 1 movie on Apple TV in 100 countries according to FlixPatrol.

What is Mayday about?

Mayday places Reynolds back in the cockpit as Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly. He plays a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot sent on a top-secret mission into Soviet territory during the Cold War. The mission goes wrong when Troy is forced to crash-land behind enemy lines. Stranded in the Russian wilderness with enemy forces closing in, his best chance of survival comes from Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent played by Kenneth Branagh from Dunkirk and Oppenheimer.

The characters work together to escape Soviet territory, transforming a dangerous Cold War mission into an unlikely buddy adventure.

Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, and David Morse join Reynolds and Branagh in the cast.

Early reception has been generally positive, though critics remain divided on the film. Mayday sits in the low-80s on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews praising the chemistry between Reynolds and Branagh alongside the energetic action-comedy style.

Some critics found fault with the script and Reynolds’ familiar wisecracking persona. However, reviewers agree that Branagh enjoys working with the material.

Mayday is streaming now on Apple TV.
