Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated that able-bodied people should not receive government assistance simply because they choose not to work.

Sanders launched an advertising campaign to promote new work requirements for welfare benefits, but the video unexpectedly drew criticism from both political opponents and several conservative commentators.

In a video published on September 28, Sanders introduces viewers to a fictional character named Brad. Brad is a young man wearing a hoodie who spends his day playing video games on the couch and eating snacks.

She stated that this is why the state introduced new requirements for receiving benefits, noting that if a person is young, healthy, and receives government assistance, they must work, study, or volunteer.

The changes primarily affect the Medicaid ARHOME program. A soft launch of the new rules began on July 1 in Arkansas for non-exempt residents aged 19 to 64. These individuals must complete at least 80 hours per month of work, study, job training, or volunteering. Exemptions include certain pregnant and postpartum women, individuals with severe medical needs, specific categories of caregivers, and disabled veterans. State data shows that approximately 210,000 people were registered in ARHOME in May.

However, the portrayal of Brad became the main subject of discussion. The video drew noticeable negative reactions from many people who found it odd to depict a typical welfare recipient as a young white male gamer when the reality in many states looks somewhat different.
