Rumor: Sony to Release New DualSense Controller with a Removable Battery

Alongside new console revisions, Sony may be preparing an updated DualSense that includes a long-requested feature.

Sony is reportedly working on a refreshed DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5 that will offer a user-replaceable battery. The information comes from Polish outlet PPE, which previously and accurately predicted the arrival of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Sony’s consoles.

Historically, PlayStation controllers have shipped with non-removable batteries. That design removed the need for disposable cells and felt convenient, but in practice integrated batteries lose capacity over time, and replacing them requires taking the controller apart.

By contrast, many rival controllers allow users to swap batteries or cells themselves, a flexibility DualSense owners have lacked. For that reason, numerous fans have been calling on Sony to produce a DualSense with a removable battery — and according to the latest rumors, that demand may finally be answered.

Previous reports suggested Sony is preparing a new PS5 Pro model for the European market under the designation CFI-7121, aimed at improved energy efficiency. It’s possible the revised controller could be unveiled alongside that console.

Recall that Sony quietly released an updated PS5 Slim featuring a reduced SSD capacity of 825 GB. Analysts see that move as an effort to keep console prices lower, while Microsoft has increased prices on some of its models by $50–$200 over the past year.
