Rumor: EA Considers Selling BioWare and Select Franchises
In August, the company officially delisted from the stock exchange.
Following the completion of Electronic Arts’ acquisition by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, the company initiated a broad cost-cutting program. Against this backdrop, new rumors have emerged regarding the potential sale of BioWare and several of EA’s owned game franchises.
Insider Mike Straw shared the information. In response to a user’s question, he stated that EA will face massive staff layoffs over the next 12 months. According to him, leadership is also considering closing or selling individual studios, with BioWare specifically named among them.
Additionally, the insider claims that EA may put a portion of its intellectual property up for sale. It remains unknown which specific franchises might be included in a potential deal. However, if BioWare is indeed sold, well-known series such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age could potentially transfer to the new owner along with the studio.

It is worth noting that similar rumors surfaced last fall. Reports at the time claimed that EA was allegedly seeking a buyer for BioWare following the commercial failure of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though the deal did not materialize. Instead, the publisher greenlit the development of Mass Effect 5, which, according to official company statements, is still in production.
Now, following the completion of the multi-billion-dollar ownership change and the announced focus on cost reduction, the situation may have changed. Former BioWare lead writer Patrick Weekes previously expressed concerns that the studio’s future would be under threat under new leadership.
