Danny Trejo wasn’t kidding when he said to get ready for some heat in the preview posted by Rosalía on Monday announcing her new song, “La Fama,” with The Weeknd.
The bachata track, the first single off her forthcoming album Motomami due next year, officially dropped today (Nov. 11) and kicks off with the Machete actor introducing Rosalía as she takes the stage. “I want to introduce the following number but I must warn you, she’s not for everyone, she will pierce your heart and she will be your only obsession.”
The Spanish singer then takes center stage at a nightclub where she slowly seduces The Weeknd, who sits across from her and watches her dance and sing about how fame can be a double-edged sword. The pair then trade verses in Spanish in Rosalía’s first-ever bachata. Stay tuned till the end of the video for a plot twist.
About “La Fama,” Rosalía said in a statement: “I wanted to write, in my own way, a bachata with a little story around ambition. Taking as a reference the lyrics of Ruben Blades or Patti Smith and the songs of Aventura, I ended up writing a story of romance with fame.”
It’s not the first time Rosalía and The Weeknd have collaborated. The “Con Altura” singer jumped on a bilingual “Blinding Lights” remix last December.
Rosalía announced Motomami via a 15-second montage with quick shots of herself strutting around in a cutout one-piece paired with black studded heels. In another look, she’s covered in butterflies and glitter as she chants the phrase “Motomami” over a bass thump.
The project will follow her 2018 Latin Grammy-winning album El Mal Querer, which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart (dated Nov. 16, 2018) and won five Latin Grammys, including album of the year and best contemporary pop vocal album.
