Robert Pattinson Psychological Thriller Becomes #1 Streaming Hit

Robert Pattinson has come a long way since playing a sparkling vampire in the Twilight movies. He showed off his dramatic chops in early career roles in Remember Me and Water for Elephants. Once he said goodbye to Edward Cullen with 2012’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, he took on dramatic, whacky, and disturbing roles to showcase his range. Pattinson starred in Good Time, High Life, The Lighthouse, and Tenet, along with his turn as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman. Fans are still waiting for its sequel, which is on track for February 2028. He also played weird characters with unusual voices, such as the titular clone in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and the titular bird in Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron.

Pattinson is having a strong 2026 after playing the antagonist Antinous in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. One of his co-stars is Zendaya, who plays Athena in The Odyssey and MJ in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The pair will reunite later this year in Dune: Part 3, the final entry in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga. Amid those blockbusters, Pattinson and Zendaya joined forces in April for A24’s psychological thriller The Drama. The film became the number one movie on HBO Max, according to FlixPatrol, after landing on the streaming service on July 31.

What is The Drama about?

The Drama follows Charlie, played by Pattinson, and Emma, played by Zendaya, in the lead-up to their wedding. While they have been together for a couple of years, they realize how much they do not know about each other after trading secrets with two friends. Marketing for The Drama hid the damaging secrets these characters hold, and viewers benefit from going into the film blind.

The bulk of the film traces the fallout between Charlie and Emma once revelations come to light as the couple careens toward their wedding night. The Drama examines a relationship pushed to the brink.

The Drama’s ending, explained

The Drama has been one of the buzziest movies of the year for its discussions of morality and how people weigh thoughts against actions.

After learning of Emma’s past desire to carry out a school shooting, Charlie spirals and questions whether he should go through with the marriage. The couple does marry, but the ceremony descends into chaos. Emma worries that Charlie told his coworker her secret, while the coworker’s boyfriend learns Charlie tried to sleep with her and beats him up. Emma runs away from the wedding, and Charlie goes to their favorite diner alone.

The Drama delivers a hopeful ending once the physical fights stop. Even after learning Charlie thought the worst of her and tried to cheat, Emma joins him at the diner where Charlie sits bloodied and disheveled. They learn each other’s dark secrets—Emma’s being much darker—and choose to start over. Acting as if they are meeting for the first time allows the couple to reset their relationship and put the past behind them, securing a brand new day. While marriage is challenging, nothing in Charlie and Emma’s future together matches the difficulty of the week they survived.
