Ridley Scott focuses on visuals and frames Denzel Washington as an icy figure in a chaotic world. Frank Lucas possesses the calculating calm of a sociopath and shows contempt for rival gangsters like Nicky Barnes played by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Tango played by Idris Elba. He dresses simply and sometimes disguises himself to observe operations. He criticizes his brother Huey played by Chiwetel Ejiofor for wanting to flaunt his wealth.

Frank Lucas saves his greatest anger for Detective Nick Trupo played by Josh Brolin, a corrupt cop who harasses him and drives a luxury car. Their tense interactions carry a constant threat of violence. In one memorable scene, Nick Trupo and his officers destroy a custom dresser Frank Lucas built for his mother to replace one she lost during his childhood. The gift represents his family escaping poverty and his desire to give his mother what she deserved. Its destruction mirrors his downfall as his power crumbles and his family ends up worse off than before.

Denzel Washington brings methodical confidence to his role, but Ridley Scott does not hide the evil behind the drug empire. Scenes of Frank Lucas enjoying his club cut to brutal sequences of intravenous drug use, including a woman overdosing near a screaming baby. Frank Lucas profits from the horrors of war and the misery of addicted veterans to bring death home.

Ridley Scott and screenwriter Steven Zaillian mirror the dark character portrait of The Godfather rather than the intricate crime drama of The Wire. A parallel plotline follows Newark cop Richie Roberts played by Russell Crowe as he tries to uncover the source of the city drug trade. This storyline struggles to match the narrative of Frank Lucas, particularly when it wanders into Richie Roberts’ messy personal life.

Ridley Scott directs action epics like Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, but American Gangster displays his talent for a contained story. The film features his signature morally gray protagonists, dramatic cityscapes, and sudden violence alongside understated character development similar to The Dog Stars.
