Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin didn’t hold back in a recent interview with People, in which he recalled his conversation on national television with Barbara Walters in 2000 that left him feeling violated and with “a little PTSD.”
The moment that shook him was when the journalist suggested, “You could stop these rumors. You could say, ‘Yes I am gay or no I’m not.'”
“When she dropped the question, I felt violated because I was just not ready to come out. I was very afraid,” Martin told People for their second annual Pride issue, for which he graces the cover.“There’s a little PTSD with that.”
The 49-year-old chart-topping artist came out 10 years after the Walters interview. “Sexuality is one complicated thing,” he said. “It’s not black and white. It’s filled with colors. When I was dating women, I was in love with women. It felt right, it felt beautiful. You can’t fake chemistry — the chemistry was there with them. I wasn’t misleading anyone.” Now, Martin is a “man with no secrets,” he said in the new interview. “When I came out, it just felt amazing.”
The “Canción Bonita” singer also talked about his forthcoming 11th studio album, titled Play, which will be released soon. The first single is set to drop June 10. Additionally, Martin will kick off his co-headlining tour with Enrique Iglesias this fall. The 26-date North American tour begins Sept. 25 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena and will wrap up Nov. 20 at Anaheim’s Honda Center. See the full list of dates here.
