Report: Bungie Has No Plans for Destiny 3 Amid Upcoming Layoffs

Bungie, the renowned studio behind Destiny 2 and Marathon, is preparing for a wave of significant staff reductions, according to a recent report from Bloomberg. This development follows the company’s decision to conclude active work on its long-standing live-service shooter, Destiny 2, after nine years of consistent updates.

Sources familiar with the studio’s operations indicate that, with the conclusion of Destiny 2 support next month, there are no immediate follow-up projects assigned to that team. These insiders, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information, noted that the studio has not yet greenlit any new ventures, including a potential Destiny 3, despite internal pitches from staff.

Marathon is positioned to become the next go-to shooter for hardcore gamers

Bungie’s latest FPS presents a steep learning curve for newcomers.

As the studio shifts focus, resources are being redirected toward Marathon, which has struggled to gain momentum following its early March launch. Data from SteamDB suggests that both titles are currently hovering at similar engagement levels, with both games seeing daily player peaks in the range of 11,000 to 12,000.

The Bloomberg report also revealed that while leadership previously explored strategies to modernize Destiny 2 and lower the barrier to entry for new players, they ultimately opted to cease ongoing development instead.

Despite the end of live development, Destiny 2 is set to remain accessible to the community. In a formal blog post confirming the transition, Bungie assured players that the game would continue to function in a state similar to the original Destiny, with the final update focused on ensuring the game remains a hospitable environment for returning fans.
