PS5 and PC Prices May Rise as Memory Supply Through 2027 Sells Out

Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have already allocated almost all of their DRAM and HBM memory production capacity for 2027 due to massive demand from the artificial intelligence industry, according to DigiTimes.

Gamers have watched prices rise for consoles, computers, and components for many months, and the situation could become even worse. According to the new data, nearly all future memory production capacity is already booked.

Taiwanese publication DigiTimes reported that Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have fully allocated their DRAM and HBM production capacities for 2027. This means the memory produced next year is already sold under long-term contracts.

The primary reason is the growth of artificial intelligence. Large technology companies and data center operators are purchasing huge volumes of HBM memory, and demand significantly exceeds supply. Some customers are reportedly trying to secure additional shipments by offering higher prices.

The issue could affect everyday buyers. In 2027, DRAM shipments for PCs, laptops, smartphones, and consoles may decrease, leading to price increases and potential shortages of specific models.

A difficult situation is also developing regarding NAND memory for solid-state drives. Its production capacity is still available, but it could be fully reserved by the end of August 2026.

This is bad news for Sony, Microsoft, and other hardware manufacturers. The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and computers are already rising in price, and further memory shortages could lead to new price hikes.
