Power to the ‘People’: Martin Garrix, Bono & The Edge Surge on Multiple Charts

Martin Garrix, joined by featured rock legends Bono and The Edge of U2, parades back into the top 15 of Billboard‘s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated July 3) with “We Are the People,” up from No. 37 to No. 15. The track, the official song of the UEFA European Football Championship, was originally released May 14 and now benefits from its “Martin Garrix Remix,” released June 18.

The song, which Garrix, Bono and The Edge performed live at the UEFA Euro 2020 Opening Ceremony on June 11 in Rome (after the competition was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19), drew 843,000 U.S. streams, up 108%, in the week ending June 24, according to MRC Data. The chart’s top Streaming Gainer nears its high of No. 12, where it started on the May 29 Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Elsewhere, the collab storms into the upper half of the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for the first time (118-78). It also enters the Adult Pop Airplay chart at No. 40, marking the Dutch DJ/producer’s second song to impact the chart, after “In the Name of Love,” with Bebe Rexha (No. 37 peak, January 2017). Ireland’s U2 posted 20 Adult Pop Airplay entries from 1997 (after the list launched in 1996) through 2018.

Just behind the trio on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs comes a twosome, as Becky Hill and David Guetta bow at No. 16 with “Remember.” Singer Hill’s 10th charted title, it’s the record-extending 57th for French DJ/producer Guetta. (Kygo is next with 52, dating to the chart’s 2013 inception.) The song tallied 843,000 domestic streams in its debut week.

Speaking of Guetta, his recently released remix of Melbourne, Australia-based duo Shouse’s 2017 track “Love Tonight” helps spark it on multiple charts, including Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, where it becomes Shouse’s first career entry at No. 20. “Love” lifts onto the list with 582,000 Stateside streams and 500 downloads sold, also good for a No. 17 start on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales.

Meanwhile, “Love” leaps 140-106 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and debuts at No. 37 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay. It’s drawing core-dance airplay on stations including SiriusXM’s Diplo’s Revolution, KMVQ-HD2 San Francisco and iHeartRadio’s Evolution Network. (The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on nearly 80 top 40-formatted reporters.)
