Pokémon Winds & Waves leaks reveal a concept scrapped by Game Freak 20 years ago

Pokémon enthusiasts have recently unearthed a rare documentary chronicling the development of 2007’s Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. This archival footage has become a goldmine for dedicated fans, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process behind starter Pokémon, early design drafts, and surprising foreshadowing for modern entries in the series. Some concepts discarded over two decades ago only recently resurfaced in Pokémon Pokopia, and industry whispers suggest they might finally come to fruition in next year’s highly anticipated Pokémon Winds and Waves.

<p>Around the 18-minute mark of his analysis, prominent Pokémon historian and YouTuber Lewtwo highlights the meticulous labor required to extract details from this grainy 480p footage. By painstakingly adjusting the contrast on background documents that were never meant to be the focus of the lens, archivists were able to salvage fleeting glimpses of early character designs. Lewtwo described the grueling process of teasing these hidden illustrations from the low-resolution frames as "absolute hell."</p>

<p>One of the most significant discoveries is an early iteration of Gastrodon, the sea slug Pokémon famous for its regional variations. While players know the current brown (West Sea) and green (East Sea) versions, the foundation for this concept was originally laid by director Junichi Masuda during the development of <em>Pokémon Ruby</em> and <em>Sapphire</em>. However, it took another five years for the creature—and its pre-evolution, Shellos—to make its official debut in the Sinnoh region.</p>

<p>Intriguingly, the documentary reveals a yellow-hued Gastrodon—a variation that never reached the final games. This would have remained a trivial footnote were it not for the writers of <em>Pokémon Pokopia</em>, who wove references to a elusive "yellow Shellos" into their own narrative. It appears this meta-commentary was directly pulled from the deepest recesses of Game Freak’s archives.</p>

<p>"It is a mind-bending, full-circle moment for one of Sinnoh's most beloved designs," says Lewtwo. While Shellos has yet to appear in <em>Pokopia</em>, rumors abound that <em>Pokémon Winds</em> and <em>Waves</em> will feature an expansive roster of 300 new monsters, including an emphasis on regional variants. Given the upcoming title's focus on 3D ocean exploration, the introduction of a new aquatic slug variant feels like a natural fit.</p>
