Pokémon Unveils New Starters for Upcoming Mainline Title: Winds and Waves

During the recent Pokémon Presents broadcast commemorating the franchise’s landmark 30th anniversary, Nintendo officially unveiled Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. The debut teaser offered a first glimpse at the sprawling new region and introduced the highly anticipated Generation 10 starter trio: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua.

Adhering to the series’ long-standing tradition, the new starters consist of Grass, Fire, and Water-type companions. Browt is a nature-inspired avian, Pombon is a spirited Fire-type canine, and Gecqua is a sleek Water-type gecko. While all three are undeniably charming, Pombon is already stealing hearts as the newest addition to the legacy of adorable dog Pokémon.

Following the open-world blueprint of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Winds and Waves will grant trainers total freedom to explore diverse landscapes. The journey spans across volcanic grottos, crystalline coastlines, and dense tropical jungles. As noted in the official announcement, the local wildlife has adapted to these environments with intricate, unique ecosystems. Success in this adventure will require players to form deep bonds with their Pokémon to navigate treacherous terrains and withstand the volatile forces of nature. Notably, the reveal trailer also showcased a pair of Pikachu dressed as tourists, suggesting a lighthearted vacation theme in certain parts of the region.

Pokémon Winds and Waves are slated for a 2027 release, arriving as exclusives for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. While the community awaits the next generation, players can dive into the classic Kanto region with the Switch versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, available starting today, or experience the recently launched Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
