Gamers hope that tech enthusiasts will come up with a way to run Grand Theft Auto VI.

Tech enthusiasts from the OverkillLabs group recently announced an important technical achievement by managing to natively run a game from the PlayStation 5 console on a PC.

This is not about a Sony console exclusive yet, but rather a multiplatform roguelike. In this case, the very fact that such a game launch is possible is what makes it interesting:

Dead Cells for PS5 works as a fully native Windows program: relinking, not emulation. As far as we know, this is the first PlayStation 5 game running as a fully native program for the Windows operating system.

The OverkillLabs project is based on the work of AnyPS5, whose creator aims to natively run PlayStation 5 console games on a PC.

The developers tested the Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania Edition (PPSA15552) release and reported that the game delivered about 55 to 60 FPS in enclosed areas, while the frame rate frequently dropped to 30 to 35 FPS in open scenes. The launch was performed on a PC equipped with an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti graphics card.

OverkillLabs published the source code for DeadCells-PS5-Native (current version 0.1.0) publicly on GitHub. Copyright-protected materials are not included in the package: “The project does not contain the game itself, firmware, keys, or Sony software. You must independently provide your own legally obtained decrypted copy of the game.”
