A new breakthrough in PlayStation 3 security research has recently come to light, as researchers successfully acquired a security key that had remained unavailable for roughly 20 years. This discovery will give developers access to yet another early stage of the console boot process.

soflysojoe drew the community’s attention to research by developer zecoxao, who worked alongside jestero and other community members. The researchers discovered that the Cell processor can leave small fragments of sensitive data behind after completing an operation.

By interrupting this process at a specific moment, the researchers managed to recover enough critical data to calculate the lv0ldr key on a CECHL series PlayStation 3.

lv0ldr is one of the initial programs loaded when booting up the PlayStation 3. soflysojoe explains that this finding is important because it potentially opens the door to restoring bricked consoles, as well as enabling the bypass of Blu-ray restrictions and more.
