Peter Hook Dedicates ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ to Keanu Reeves at Show

Keanu Reeves introduced Peter Hook & The Light onstage in San Francisco and was later seen dancing to Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” a track the actor previously named his all-time favorite.

The event took place at the Warfield on Sept. 21, where Hook, the co-founding bassist of Joy Division and New Order, performed alongside his band The Light. Reeves introduced the group to the audience by stating, “The one, the only Peter Hook and the Light! Playing the music we all love from then, today and tomorrow,” before embracing Hook.

Reeves previously told The Late Show With Stephen Colbert that “Love Will Tear Us Apart” is his desert-island song. Hook dedicated the 1980 track to Reeves during the 26-song set, which featured material from Joy Division and New Order alongside tracks from Hook’s mid-1990s project Monaco. Online footage captured Reeves dancing from a private box.

The appearance occurred the night before Reeves’ band Dogstar performed at San Francisco’s Fillmore on their All In Now tour. Reeves formed the alternative-rock trio in Los Angeles in the early 1990s alongside vocalist-guitarist Bret Domrose and drummer-actor Robert Mailhouse. The group shares post-punk influences with Hook’s work. Following a breakup in 2002, Dogstar reunited in 2020 and released Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees in 2023, which reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart. Their current album All In Now was released this year via Dillon Street Records, and its title track gave Dogstar its first appearance on a Billboard songs chart in over 25 years when it debuted on Mainstream Rock Airplay in April.

Hook will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this fall as part of the class of 2026 for his contributions to Joy Division and New Order. The inductees also include Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan.
