Tom Felton’s turn in the Broadway production has reignited speculation about whether other original cast members might return.
While HBO develops a new series based on J.K. Rowling’s books, fans of the Harry Potter universe are still hopeful about seeing familiar faces. Interest in a reunion of the original trio — Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint — was stirred anew after Tom Felton recently appeared as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway staging of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
In an interview with the BBC, Rupert Grint admitted he’s unsure whether he’ll revisit the role that shaped his childhood.
“Maybe someday. Never say ‘never’, but for now — as fond as I am of that period — I’m enjoying exploring work outside that world.”
He went on to say that Ron’s presence still follows him, though he now regards it with equanimity: “I don’t think I’ll ever completely step out of his shadow, but I’m fine with that.”
Grint also confessed that news of the new cast stirred a wave of nostalgia. The casting of Alastair Stout as Ron transported him back to the early days on set: “I remember every single second.”
Additionally, Grint revealed he sent Stout a letter wishing him well before filming began — much like Daniel Radcliffe reached out to support Dominic MacLachlan, the new actor playing Harry Potter.
“It felt like passing the baton. I wished him all the best. I loved working on those films, and I hope he gets to enjoy the same experience.”
He also joked that there’s a certain “family resemblance” between him and Stout — probably a nod to their red hair.
Despite his reservations, Grint doesn’t rule out the possibility that his children might one day step into the Harry Potter world: “Why not?”
HBO’s Harry Potter reboot is scheduled for 2027. A second season is already in development, though no premiere date for the first season has been announced.
