Persepolis Creator Marjane Satrapi Has Died

Marjane Satrapi, the acclaimed Franco-Iranian artist, author, and filmmaker best known for her landmark graphic novel Persepolis, has passed away at the age of 56. Her family confirmed the news, noting that her death comes just over a year after the passing of her husband, Mattias Ripa.

Born in Iran in 1969, Satrapi relocated to France in the mid-1990s, where she embarked on her distinguished career in literature and the visual arts. She achieved global recognition with Persepolis, an autobiographical series that poignantly detailed her childhood during the Islamic Revolution in Iran and her subsequent coming-of-age in Europe. The work was translated into dozens of languages, resonating with millions of readers across the globe.

In 2007, Satrapi co-directed an animated film adaptation of Persepolis alongside Vincent Paronnaud. The critically acclaimed feature was honored with the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
