Paramount is working on a new G.I. Joe

Paramount Pictures has commissioned two separate screenplays for the expansion of the G.I. Joe cinematic universe, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The first project is being penned by Max Landis (Chronicle, Bright), who faced sexual misconduct allegations in 2017. Meanwhile, Danny McBride, the creator and star of The Righteous Gemstones, is developing a second script. Paramount reportedly intends to synthesize the two drafts into a single, cohesive narrative once both writers have completed their work.

This “writers’ room” strategy mirrors the approach Paramount previously employed to map out the Transformers and Star Trek franchises. Specific plot points for the upcoming features are currently being kept under wraps.

The G.I. Joe brand originated as a popular Hasbro toy line before evolving into a successful comic book series. The franchise hit the big screen in 2009 with Channing Tatum leading the charge, followed by a 2013 sequel starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Most recently, the studio released the 2021 spin-off Snake Eyes. Collectively, the film series has grossed approximately $712 million at the global box office.

Earlier in 2024, industry insiders indicated that Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in a long-anticipated crossover event between the Transformers and G.I. Joe universes.
