Online Outrage After EA Sold for $55 Billion to the “Worst Possible” Buyer

EA has officially gone private following a $55 billion transaction with three major investment firms: Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, which was founded by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Online reaction was largely negative — many users expressed doubt about the future of the publisher’s franchises, fearing that EA’s position will deteriorate under new ownership.

Silver Lake, which is simultaneously reported to be pursuing a TikTok acquisition, is known for its emphasis on AI integration. Gamers interpreted this as a red flag for imminent large-scale layoffs and intensified cost-cutting. Bloomberg reports the deal will saddle EA with roughly $20 billion in debt. The company is reportedly bracing for another round of job cuts, more aggressive monetization strategies, and project cancellations — marking what would be the second major wave of layoffs in 2025.

On social media, many called it “the most EA move ever,” pointing to long-standing criticism that the publisher prioritizes profit over craft. Franchises reportedly at risk include Battlefield, The Sims, FC and Apex Legends. Observers also warn that Saudi Arabia’s conservative policies could prompt content changes that sanitize or alter game narratives, including within The Sims.

Motive’s slate is also in a precarious position. After last year’s cancellation of Black Panther, the studio now faces the possibility that Iron Man could be axed as well — the game may be cancelled due to the new debt burden.
