Onions: Highlands Fishing Preview

Kinlaig landscape

You won’t be the only living thing to take root in Kinlaig. The Highlands Fishing expansion also brings a new root crop: onions. Beginning November 4, you’ll have access to purpose-built machines and fresh production chains to grow, harvest, and process this vegetable.

Cultivating Onions

Plant between March and April, keep them fertilized and weed-free, then trim the haulms before harvesting in August or September. Onions require a short haulm-cutting stage prior to collection to ensure clean, market-ready produce.

Dutch manufacturer Holaras supplies two complementary implements that operate together. The Holaras UMR 330-FC severs the haulms and creates a centered swath, preparing the bulbs for the next pass.

The Holaras UR 205, mounted at the rear, thoroughly cleans bulbs after the front-mounted unit lifts them. It also slightly compacts the soil so the onions stay separate from dirt. By default the swath is centered, but you can select left or right alignment when needed.

For collection you can choose the GRIMME Varitron 470 or the Ropa Keiler 2 RK22, both offered with onion-specific configurations. In real life, potato harvesters like the Ropa Keiler 2 are often adapted for onions, and the same flexibility is modeled here.

Once harvested, take them to the Holaras AS 25 onion topper on your farm. Its high-speed blades and specialized screening bars use airflow and vibration to feed the haulms into the cutters, neatly trimming the onions for packaging.

After topping and sorting, the onions are boxed and ready for further processing at dedicated production facilities.

Processing Onions — Salty, Soupy & Fried

Decide whether to transport fresh onions to factories for value-added products — onion salt, onion soup, or fried onions — or to sell the raw crop directly. Selling raw is quicker but yields lower margins compared to processed goods.

We’ll publish a dedicated preview on production lines, buildings, and decorative assets—several previews remain in the run-up to release, so stay tuned for more details.
