Omar Chaparro made a name for himself in film and television, ultimately becoming one of Mexico’s most renowned actors, TV personalities and comedians. Now, he’s out to conquer the music industry with the release of his new single “Las Locuras Mias,” premiering exclusively on Billboard below.
“Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been working on a lot of music,” he tells Billboard, crediting music executive Martin Fabian, producer Javier Calderon, and his manager Nadir Assis for believing in his project and helping him find his own sound.
In “Las Locuras Mias,” penned by Colombian composer Omar Geles and originally performed by Silvestre Dangond in vallenato, Chaparro recruited Panamanian singer-songwriter Joey Montana for a new, mariachi-infused, cumbia-meets-urban fusion.
“I loved the lyrics. I swear, I felt that I would’ve written this song to my girlfriend 25 years ago when I was younger, naive, and in love with love,” he says of his connection to the track. “With this song, I discovered a tone of voice I didn’t know of and found my style.”
But this isn’t the first time Chaparro has explored the music biz. In fact, the Mexican star released his debut studio album in 2010, followed by Me Enamoré de Ti in 2014, and ¿Como Caído del Cielo? in 2019, where he sings songs for the movie of the same name.
“Portraying Pedro Infante was a big challenge for me, but it made me have confidence and believe in myself as a singer,” he notes. “I believe that ‘Las Locuras Mias’ will help launch my music career and make people realize — at least those who only know me as an actor and comedian — that I’m taking this quite seriously.”
Chaparro, whose eclectic playlist includes Frank Sinatra, Amy Winehouse, Queen, Banda MS, Luis Miguel and many more, says his passion for music traces back to when he was a little kid when he would sing heartfelt Camilo Sesto songs with his mother and taught himself how to play the guitar. At 20, he also landed his first gig on the radio.
“It’s always been a part of me,” he says. “I have more than 10 years in music. I haven’t stopped taking singing lessons, but now is when I feel more comfortable and knowledgeable.”
As for his expectations for his return to music? Chaparro says he feels very proud of his collaboration with Montana and would not change anything about the song.
