While neither Years & Years‘ Olly Alexander nor Sir Elton John were nominated at the 2021 Brit Awards, the pair decided to steal the show anyways with their stunning cover of the Pet Shop Boys’ classic “It’s a Sin.”
In a stunning performance, paying tribute to the LGBTQ community’s perseverance through the AIDS epidemic, John appeared playing the piano, while Alexander draped himself across the top, dressed in a lace crop top and crooning the song’s iconic lyrics: “Everything I’ve ever done/ Everything I ever do/ Every place I’ve ever been/ Everywhere I’m going to,” he sang, “It’s a sin.”
Quickly, the song erupted in into an ’80s synth-pop dance anthem, with John and Alexander trading verses back and forth, while the stage transformed into a massive maze filled with dancers, drag queens and confetti. “For everything I long to do/ No matter when or where or who/ Has one thing in common too,” the pair sang. “It’s a, it’s a, it’s a, it’s a sin!”
The performance comes after Alexander’s leading performance on the Russell T Davies series of the same name, which focused on the lives of a group of gay men living in London at the onset of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s.
