Olivia Rodrigo finally fed her fans with Sour, her highly anticipated debut album that she released on Friday (May 21) via Geffen Records.
The 11-track project includes her previously released breakout debut hit “Drivers License,” which spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, her top 10 hit “Deja Vu” and her latest song “Good 4 U.”
And for her fellow Swifties, Rodrigo has a sweet surprise: The fourth track, “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back,” interpolates “New Year’s Day” from the pop superstar’s 2017 album Reputation. Swift and her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff each have writing credits on the song.
“At first I was like, ‘I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to be pigeonholed,'” the 18-year-old pop star said in her Billboard cover story of the heartbreak anthems she recorded for the album. So she tried peppering in some sweet love songs that ultimately didn’t feel like an authentic fit. “I’m a songwriter who writes from a place of authenticity and truth. And truthfully, love and happiness and everything weren’t feelings that I was feeling at the time. And what’s the point of putting out a record if it isn’t something that you feel is important to say to people?”
