Olivia Rodrigo Recruits David Byrne for a Special “Drivers License” Anniversary Release

It has been half a decade since Olivia Rodrigo transformed the pop landscape with her debut smash, “Drivers License.” To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the track that launched her career, the singer-songwriter has enlisted the legendary David Byrne for a unique collaborative project.

The Talking Heads frontman has released a soulful reinterpretation of the atmospheric pop anthem, which is now available for streaming. This cover will also be featured on an exclusive 7-inch vinyl alongside a live recording of Rodrigo and Byrne performing “Burning Down the House.” The duo originally surprised fans with the duet during Rodrigo’s 2025 headline set at the Governors Ball. Fans can currently find the limited-edition vinyl for preorder on her official website.

When “Drivers License” first arrived in 2021, Rodrigo was just 17 years old. The track made history by making her the youngest artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for eight consecutive weeks. Her debut album, Sour, followed shortly after, maintaining a five-week reign atop the Billboard 200. According to official reports, Byrne’s rendition is only the first installment in a series of covers planned to celebrate the enduring legacy of Sour.

Earlier this week, Rodrigo began dropping hints about the festivities. Her official website was updated to feature a mock “driver’s license renewal” form, prompting fans to register their details for upcoming news. This interactive teaser set the stage for the announcement of the Byrne collaboration.

Since the release of Sour, Rodrigo has continued her upward trajectory with her sophomore album, Guts, which also topped the charts in 2023. While much of her recent activity has focused on her world tour, “Drivers License” remains a pivotal emotional highlight of her live performances. In addition to the Byrne 7-inch, a Target-exclusive vinyl featuring both the original studio track and the live version from the Governors Ball is also available for preorder.
