Octopath Traveler’s Switch 2 upgrade is a masterclass in how not to handle next-gen updates

To mark the franchise’s eighth anniversary, Square Enix has revealed that both Octopath Traveler and its successor are launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1. However, this celebratory announcement comes with a significant caveat. According to the fine print, there are no plans to offer a free or even a discounted upgrade path for existing owners. To compound the frustration, original save files will not carry over to the new system. This leaves many wondering: what is the actual incentive for picking up these re-releases?

<p>Square Enix’s strategy here appears remarkably shortsighted. With the Switch 2 versions priced at $59.99 individually or $74.99 for a bundle, the value proposition is aimed squarely at newcomers rather than the dedicated fanbase. Given that the series has already moved over 7 million units, the most likely customers are the very people who have already invested in these titles, and they currently have little reason to purchase these high-priced upgrades.</p>

<p>The situation is further complicated by the Switch 2’s expected backward compatibility and performance-boosting features, which will likely make original copies look and play better without requiring a re-purchase. Forced to start from scratch without legacy save data, many veteran players will find it hard to justify the cost for these massive RPGs, which demand hundreds of hours of commitment.</p>

<p>Ultimately, one has to ask why Square Enix expects this pricing model to resonate. There is a proven industry standard for this type of transition; Nintendo itself offers fair upgrade paths for its own catalog, typically charging a nominal fee for significant enhancements. By failing to offer a reasonable transition for existing owners, Square Enix is essentially alienating its most passionate supporters. In an era where consumers are increasingly wary of being exploited by digital storefronts, this approach feels particularly out of touch.</p>
