Focus Features is gearing up for an ambitious awards season push for its breakout horror hit, Obsession, according to director Curry Barker.
There’s going to be an awards campaign. I’m not entirely sure what that entails, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up. I’d rather focus on my next project,
— Barker remarked in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. To date, Obsession has raked in a staggering $287 million against a modest budget of under $1 million. The film has shattered previous records for Focus Features and has officially cemented its place among the top ten highest-grossing horror films in North American box office history.
The narrative centers on Bear (Michael Johnston), a shy underdog who, in a desperate bid to win the affection of his colleague Nikki (Inde Navarrette), acquires a supernatural artifact capable of granting any wish. As the plot unfolds, Nikki’s infatuation with Bear spirals into a dangerous fixation. The film has garnered widespread critical acclaim, boasting an impressive 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
