*NSYNC Star and Type 1 Diabetes Advocate Lance Bass to be Honored at Breakthrough T1D Los Angeles Gala

*NSYNC member and type 1 diabetes advocate Lance Bass will receive the Spotlight Award at the annual Breakthrough T1D Los Angeles Gala on Oct. 10 at the Skirball Cultural Center.

The Greater Los Angeles chapter of Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, is hosting the Oct. 10 Cures on the Horizon Gala. The event raises funds for research to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes, a lifelong autoimmune condition that demands constant monitoring alongside insulin injections or infusions.

“Being recognized by Breakthrough T1D means so much to me because this community has become such an important part of my life,” Bass said in a statement. “When I first started sharing my diagnosis publicly, my hope was simply to make someone else feel a little less alone and to help people better understand that type 1 diabetes can affect anyone at any age. I’m incredibly honored to receive the Spotlight Award and proud to support the work Breakthrough T1D is doing to make life better for everyone living with T1D—and ultimately, to find a cure.”

Bass learned he had diabetes during the COVID-19 lockdown and shared the news publicly in 2024. He told People that the diagnosis required changes to his diet, exercise, and mindfulness habits. Now 47, Bass speaks often on behalf of the type 1 diabetes community.

KTLA 5 Morning News anchor Frank Buckley, who has an adult child with type 1 diabetes, will emcee the gala. Laura Mecoy and Cary Walker, long-term supporters and parents of a child with type 1 diabetes, serve as gala co-chairs.

The event includes dinner, hosted cocktails, dancing, silent and live auctions, and the organization’s Fund A Cure program. All tax-deductible donations made through Fund A Cure go directly toward research priorities.

*NSYNC placed six songs in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, including the No. 1 hit “It’s Gonna Be Me.” The group also landed two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 with No Strings Attached and Celebrity. Additionally, the band earned eight Grammy nominations, which included a record of the year nod for “Bye Bye Bye” and recognition for collaborations with Alabama and Gloria Estefan.
