Nicola Payne, Liam’s older sister, has opened up about the final evening she spent with her brother.
On August 29—what would have been his 32nd birthday—she posted a touching tribute on Instagram, recalling that night in vivid detail. Liam tragically died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
“Exactly one year ago today, we were brimming with excitement for all the adventures ahead,” Nicola wrote on Instagram. She described celebrating his birthday with bowling and McDonald’s, toasting his show, his aspirations and the plans he had for the future.
She continued: “We wrapped up the evening with a hug, telling you how proud we were and how deeply we loved you. If I’d known that would be our last embrace, I’d have said so much more. I wish I could go back, hold you tighter, capture your smile and voice, ask you every question and write it all down so I’d never forget.”
Nicola concluded her post by sending birthday wishes heavenward. “Happy heavenly birthday, Liam,” she wrote. “I hope you’re celebrating up there and maybe even scoring a few strikes of your own.”
Liam’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, also honored him with a heartfelt message on Instagram. “My dearest Liam, it breaks my heart that I can’t hand you a physical card or hear your laugh today,” she began. “I’ve searched for the right words, but I’ll start with the simplest: happy birthday.”
She reflected on how, in his 31 years, he brought boundless joy and hope to those around him—especially her—and assured him, “You still shine so brightly, even from afar.”
Cassidy promised to carry his memory with strength and love, vowing: “I will celebrate you extra today, honor your life, and cherish every moment we shared. August 29 will forever hold a special place in my heart. I love you so much.”
Liam Payne passed away on October 16, 2024, at age 31. Toxicology reports later revealed multiple substances in his system and a dangerously elevated blood-alcohol level at the time of the accident.
