It doesn’t sound like Nick Cannon is done having kids anytime soon.
On Monday (Aug. 9), the 40-year-old TV host appeared on The Breakfast Club where host Charlamagne the God jokingly introduced him as “Nick ‘No Condom’ Cannon.” He’s been making headlines lately after he welcomed four children in the last year, bringing his current total to seven that he recently posted up with: 10-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with Mariah Carey; 3-year-old son Golden Sagon with Brittany Bell; nearly 1-year-old daughter Powerful with Bell; 1-month-old twin boys Zion and Zillion with Abby De La Rosa; and newborn son Zen with Alyssa Scott.
But host DJ Envy asked the question on everyone’s minds: How many kids does Cannon really want at the end of the day?
“I always used to joke around and I was like, ‘I want the 12 as in the 12 tribes,'” he answered while referencing the 12 tribes of Israel. “But if I got 10 to 12, I wouldn’t be mad at it.”
He continued explaining why he wasn’t hellbent on increasing the number of children he has, but more so increasing the “amazing” feeling he gets when he spends time with his little ones.
“The beauty of fatherhood, man, when you really talk about the essence of living as a father, I’ve learned so much just from my children. And it’s so amazing. And I really just love being around my kids and just that youthful energy. It feels like you get to relive every time,” Cannon explained. “I’ve been through so much in my life — physically, mentally and spiritually — the best place that I find is the time that I spend with my kids and their energy. And to get as much of that as possible, to pass on all that I’ve lived into something else, that’s why I do it.”
While talking to the City Girls on his own radio show in July, Cannon doubled down on his decision to expand his family by having four children in one year. “I’m having these kids on purpose. It ain’t no accident!” he said.
Cannon told the “Twerkulator” rappers that he knew exactly who he did and didn’t want to have children with. “Trust me, there’s a lot of people I could’ve gotten pregnant that I didn’t,” he declared. “The ones that got pregnant are the ones that was supposed to get pregnant.”
In his interview with Charlamagne, he expanded on the topic of having multiple baby mamas, calling it a “Eurocentric concept” to be with one significant other forever.
“That’s just to classify property when you think you about it,” he explained. “When you go into that mindset and you’re really talking that talk, just the idea that ‘a man should have one woman,’ we shouldn’t have anything. I have no ownership over this person. If we’re really talking about how we co-exist and how we populate, it’s about what exchange can we create together. So I’ve never really subscribed to that mentality. I understand the institution of marriage and stuff, but if we go back to what that was about, that was to classify property.”
He went on to say that while he was a participant in creating new life with four different women, the decision wasn’t totally up to him. “I think women are blessing us. Those women — and all women — are the ones that open themselves up and say, ‘I would like to allow this man in my world and I will birth this child.’ It ain’t my decision!” he insisted. “I’m following suit.”
Cannon married Carey in 2008, which he joked on The Breakfast Club, “That’s still my wife!” The high-profile couple split in 2014 and finalized their divorce in 2016. But he claims that his ex-wife was also “never a big believer in marriage.”
“She was in some scenarios in her past where there was some overpowering … the hierarchy of a relationship, because she got married early on really young. So that skewed some views to where she no longer wanted to be in scenarios like that,” he recalled. “So when we first got down and met, we came into it like, ‘We don’t believe in marriage.’ And then it got to this place like, ‘Wow, we got a lot of similar beliefs, so let’s have some fun with this. Let’s embrace this.'”
He then went on to tell the story about their “first date conversation,” where they manifested their marriage and two children — a boy and a girl — while promising to stay friends even if things didn’t work out, and co-parent. “And that’s why we can even to this point be on the same page,” Cannon said.
