New Star Wars Book Reveals 4 Secrets About the Galaxy’s Most Important Planet

For any Star Wars devotee, Coruscant needs no introduction. Known as the crown jewel of the Core Worlds, this sprawling ecumenopolis served as the backdrop for the most pivotal moments of the prequel era—from Anakin Skywalker’s tragic descent into the shadow of the Sith to the political machinations that paved the way for Emperor Palpatine’s iron-fisted rule.

Tasked with portraying such a storied location in Andor, showrunner Tony Gilroy sought a balance: he needed to keep the city instantly recognizable while imbuing it with a grounded, gritty realism that matched his narrative tone. The production’s reality-based approach saw iconic London landmarks transformed into the Galactic Capital—utilizing the brutalist architecture of the Barbican Estate for clandestine meetings and repurposing Canary Wharf’s infrastructure to house the Imperial Security Bureau.

Insights from the newly released The Art of Andor by Phil Szostak offer a deeper look at the architectural philosophy and hidden storytelling details that defined Coruscant’s presence in the series.

1. Establishing an “Anti-Marvel” Aesthetic

Gilroy has been vocal about his desire to distance Andor from the stylized, often polished look of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a 2019 manifesto featured in the companion book, he explicitly laid out his vision: he wanted Coruscant to feel “vibrant but blemished.” He steered the creative team away from “wealth-porn slickness,” aiming instead for a complex, textured world that felt lived-in and fundamentally grounded.

VFX supervisor Mohen Leo noted that this philosophy was about restraint. Every aesthetic choice was scrutinized to ensure it served the narrative rather than mere spectacle, stripping away superficial “funk” to maintain a cohesive, gritty atmosphere.

2. The Hidden Docking Bay of the Fondor Haulcraft

Luthen Rael’s gallery is a focal point of the series, but the logistics of his arrival and departure were largely left to the viewer’s imagination. Production designer Luke Hull revealed that there was a grander plan: the Fondor Haulcraft was intended to be housed in a specialized docking bay directly connected to the back of the gallery.

Designed with modular, folding wings to accommodate tight subterranean spaces, this “ring donut” docking station would have allowed Luthen to land his ship and step directly into his shop. While budgetary constraints prevented this from making it onto the screen, it highlights the immense detail poured into the logistics of Luthen’s secret life.

3. The Clinical Nature of Dedra Meero’s Apartment

On Coruscant, social status is measured by proximity to natural light. While the elite occupy the heights, others scrape by in the shadows. Dedra Meero’s apartment in season 2 serves as a character study in cold, bureaucratic efficiency. As Hull notes, it is a “government-supplied” space—sterile, impersonal, and lacking any domestic warmth. It serves as a reminder of her role in the Imperial machine, designed more like a tactical observation post than a home.

4. The Evolution of the Axis Safehouse

In contrast to the sterile halls of the ISB, the Axis safehouse tells a different story. Set decorator Rebecca Alleyway describes the space as a “worn and torn” rental, capturing the weary, transient life of a rebel operative. Throughout the second season, the set was constantly modified to reflect the passage of time and the stress of the occupation.

Gilroy emphasized that the apartment was treated as a central character in itself. Through the collaborative efforts of the scenic department and the cinematographers, the space was crafted to mirror the escalating tension and weariness of the rebellion, ensuring the environment always echoed the emotional stakes of the story.
