New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Universe Project in Development, Partly Funded by Abu Dhabi Investors — Media

The Abu Dhabi Investment Office plans to put roughly $100 million into the game.

According to sources cited by Insider Gaming, a new project set in The Lord of the Rings universe is currently in development and is expected to receive significant funding. Reportedly, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) intends to contribute approximately $100 million. The arrangement, which was initiated last year, has not yet been finalized due to numerous outstanding details, though insiders suggest it could be formalized as soon as next week. At present, the development is being financed from internal resources.

Several companies are involved in the project, including Embracer and Revenge. Embracer has held the rights for a Lord of the Rings game adaptation since 2022, when it acquired them for nearly $400 million, and has subsequently licensed portions of those rights to other studios — among them the team responsible for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was met with widely negative reception.
