With the theatrical debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu less than a month away, the film’s narrative remains shrouded in secrecy. We know this beloved Disney Plus duo is set to operate as bounty hunters under the directive of New Republic leader Ward (played by Sigourney Weaver), with a mission to eliminate the final remnants of the Empire. Along the way, they will join forces with Rotta the Hutt (voiced by Jeremy Allen White). However, a glaring question persists: who is the primary antagonist? In the lore of Star Wars, the impact of a film is often dictated by the strength of its villain, making this void particularly unusual.

From the original Star Wars defined by Darth Vader to the prequel era’s formidable threats like Darth Maul, Count Dooku, and General Grievous, iconic baddies are a staple of the saga. Even the sequel trilogy relied on heavy hitters like Snoke and the inescapable return of Palpatine. In stark contrast, all we know of the central threat in The Mandalorian and Grogu is a cryptic designation: Commander Coin.

This moniker is unveiled within the film’s first 15 minutes, which I had the opportunity to preview at a press event in April. Early on, Ward dispatches Mando and Grogu to track down this enigmatic Imperial officer, whose true name and whereabouts are effectively erased. It is a compelling hook that promises a significant revelation. Beyond the screen, I managed to uncover additional breadcrumbs during a visit to the production's Los Angeles set.

While principal photography for The Mandalorian and Grogu wrapped in December 2025, portions of the production design remain at an LA studio. This site houses an expansive prop archive brimming with droids, weaponry, and vehicles from across the galaxy—including several artifacts linked to the elusive Commander Coin.

I immediately took note of a desk with legs meticulously carved to resemble Rancors—the fearsome beasts Luke Skywalker confronted in Jabba’s Palace. When I inquired about the piece, the film's prop master, Josh Roth, confirmed it was the workstation of Commander Coin. He then directed my attention to a gallery of creature heads lining the office walls, noting that these specific specimens would feature prominently in the film.

(When I prodded Roth for insight into Coin's true persona, he remained tight-lipped: "Yeah, he's Commander Coin.")

A closer inspection of these trophies reveals a "best of" collection of iconic beasts. I spotted a Tauntaun, similar to the one utilized by Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, alongside a Reek and a Nexu—notorious monsters from the Attack of the Clones arena sequence. Others are more difficult to classify: one appears to be a Vexis, the serpent-like creature encountered in The Rise of Skywalker, while another resembles a miniature Exogorth. There is even a bearded, black-haired figure that defies easy categorization within established canon.

Ultimately, it is evident that Coin is a connoisseur of the galaxy’s most dangerous predators, acting almost like a scavenger who preserves the history of these cinematic clashes. This could be a significant indicator that this adversary holds a tangible connection to the events of previous films.

Commander Coin could be anyone—from a resurfaced Grand Admiral Thrawn to an unexpected return of a Palpatine-related threat. Regardless of his identity, if he has the wherewithal to assemble such a collection of deadly relics, he promises to be an formidable challenge. Hopefully, Mando and Grogu are prepared for the fight of their lives.
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22.
