The Frankie Knuckles discography is about to get a bit deeper.
On Wednesday (Aug. 25), it was announced that a previously unknown and never-before-heard track by the house music creator has been discovered in the vaults of DJ International, a Chicago label specializing in house music.
The new track, “I Want the Love of My Own,” will be released in October to correspond with the 35th anniversary of Knuckles’ classic 1986 single “You Can’t Hide.” This new song was discovered on a 2” Reel-to-Reel tape, and has been restored in preparation for digital and physical release via DJ International, in partnership with Last Man Music, Remixology, Oasis Digital Studios and The Frankie Knuckles Foundation.
This announcement coincides with Frankie Knuckles Day, an Aug. 25 holiday officially sanctioned in 2004 by the city of Chicago, where Knuckles made history in the ’80s and ’90s when he was forging the genre that would go on to become the prevailing style of global dance music. (The initiative for this holiday was created by then Illinois Senator Barack Obama.) In 2004, the city also renamed a stretch of Jefferson Street near the site of the old Warehouse (the club where Knuckles forged the house sound) to Frankie Knuckles Way.
Knuckles died in 2014 at the age of 59 from complications of diabetes. He remains an internationally beloved dance world icon.
