Nelly is in the club. The St. Louis rapper’s 2002 smash “Dilemma” became the latest video to rack up more than one billion views on YouTube.
The third single from the MC’s sophomore album, Nellyville, memorably features Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland on the hook — as well as an iconic sample of Patti LaBelle’s 1983 song “Love, Need and Want You” — but it’s the lovestruck Benny Boom-directed visual that you likely remember the most.
Filmed on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley, the video for the rap ballad opens with the St. Lunatics helping new neighbor Rowland move into a new house with– oh no! — her boyfriend as Nelly looks on with love in his eyes. Undeterred by her dating status, Nelly pursues Rowland, who sings, “No matter what I do/ All I think about is you/ Even when I’m with my boo/ Boy, you know I’m crazy over you.”
For his part, Nelly was elated by the news of his billie club membership, saying in a statement, “It is both humbling and what every artist hopes for, to see your work from 20 years ago still getting such love from fans old and new. Super dope that a song made before YouTube existed is getting so much support now and shout out to Nelly fans and to my girl Kelly Rowland who helped make this song a hit when we made it and still a hit today!”
The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, as well as the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop, Top 40 and Rhythmic charts before going on to win that year’s Grammy award for best rap/sung performance.
