Neil Young Quits Facebook Over ‘Unconscionable’ Chatbot Rules Allowing ‘Romantic’ Chats With Children

Legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young has decided to sever his relationship with Facebook following allegations that Meta’s AI chatbots were permitted to engage minors in romantic and sensual dialogues.

In an official post on his Facebook page dated August 14, 2025, Young’s team announced his departure:

“At Neil Young’s request, we are no longer using Facebook for any Neil Young–related activities. Meta’s use of chatbots with children is unconscionable. Mr. Young does not want a further connection with FACEBOOK.”

The announcement did not specify whether Young plans to abandon Instagram, another platform owned by Meta.

Billboard has reached out to representatives for both Young and Meta for further comment.

This statement coincided with a Reuters investigation published the same day, which revealed that an internal Meta Platforms document allowed AI chatbots to “engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual.” Read the full report on Reuters.

Reuters also uncovered that the guidelines enabled chatbots to dispense false medical advice and assist in crafting overtly racist arguments, such as asserting that Black people are “dumber than white people.” Meta has since confirmed that the document has been revised to remove these inappropriate policies.

Young’s critiques of major tech and automotive companies are not new. In May 2025, he released “Let’s Roll Again,” an incisive track rebuking Tesla and urging Ford, General Motors and Chrysler to prioritize clean-energy vehicles that protect consumers. He sang,

“If you’re a fascist, then get a Tesla / If it’s electric, it doesn’t matter.”

The musician also frequently comments on political affairs. That same month, Young admonished former President Donald Trump for wasting time disparaging artists like Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift on Truth Social, urging:

“Stop worrying about rock stars; focus on rescuing America from the chaos you created.”
