Searchlight Pictures has acquired U.S. and additional territorial rights to the historical musical The Covenant of Anna Lee, starring Amanda Seyfried, Variety reports.
The film chronicles Anna Lee, the founder of the American religious movement known as the Shakers — a sect that emerged in the late 18th century and became known for ecstatic dancing during worship. The movie is scheduled for release before the end of 2025.
Directed by Academy Award nominee Mona Fastvold (The World to Come; The Brutalist), The Covenant of Anna Lee premiered in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival but left without awards. Critics have praised the project, and it currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
