Modified Borderlands 4 Weapons Hit Auction, but Sellers Suffer Losses Due to Gearbox Decisions

Some entrepreneurs have tried to cash in on the game’s recent buzz.

In the looter-shooter Borderlands 4, players scour the world for powerful gear, and a few saw a business opportunity: merchants attempting to monetize in-game weapons.

Listings offering modified Borderlands 4 weapons started appearing online, but demand for such items has proven fairly modest.

Eurogamer spoke with one seller, who says he hasn’t seen significant profits — though making money wasn’t his primary motive:

«[things are] not going very well. Since launch I’ve sold maybe three or four pieces, priced around £15–20 (roughly ₽1,600–2,200), which doesn’t even cover the production costs, but I’m not doing this for the money or profit.»

The developers added technical safeguards to Borderlands 4 that make assembling specific weapon builds more difficult, and the expense of “producing” them — acquiring the required data tables from hackers or dataminers — has risen substantially.

Each weapon part, along with rarity, manufacturer, level, and other attributes, is encrypted, and reports indicate those data tables can be costly — about £50–100 (approximately ₽5,000–11,000).
