Minecraft Is Getting Its First New Dimension Since 2011
Following recent restructuring and workforce reductions at Xbox, Mojang hosted its latest Minecraft Live broadcast to share a wave of exciting updates for the franchise. While information regarding the upcoming feature film remained absent, the developers dropped a monumental announcement that will permanently alter the survival crafting phenomenon: next year, the Sift dimension from Minecraft Dungeons 2 will officially arrive in vanilla Minecraft, marking the first entirely new dimension introduced to the game since the official 1.0 release back in 2011.
What was announced at the September 2026 Minecraft Live?
Mojang treated fans to a comprehensive first look at the Sift during the showcase, confirming its scheduled debut for both Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition in 2027. Ahead of that integration, the Sift will play a pivotal role in Minecraft Dungeons 2, an action-RPG spin-off heavily inspired by games like Diablo, which launches on September 29. Footage from the event highlighted the Sift as an ethereal, spirit-realm environment.
Historically, the core Minecraft experience has centered around three iconic realms: the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. Established when the title emerged from its public alpha and beta testing phases in November 2011, these foundational environments have remained untouched in terms of sheer realm additions. Over the span of nearly 15 years, Mojang has continuously enriched these existing worlds rather than expanding outward—making next year’s milestone all the more groundbreaking.
While the new dimension undoubtedly stole the spotlight, the presentation packed plenty of additional surprises. Mojang detailed the upcoming game drop, which introduces freezing ice caves as a brand-new underground biome. Within these glacial chambers, adventurers will face the formidable Frozen Zombie variant, harvest rare ice crystals, and even craft and hurl the chilling ice projectiles utilized by these adversaries.
Furthermore, curated Sound Effects packs are heading to the official Minecraft Marketplace before the conclusion of the year. Beyond software updates, real-world ventures were also highlighted; Chessington World of Adventures announced that its immersive Minecraft World theme park will feature a thrilling rollercoaster titled “Escape the Nether” alongside a dedicated themed hotel slated for a 2027 grand opening.
The broadcast also unveiled a fresh Wilderness Bound community challenge and offered a promising glimpse into a more sophisticated “creator platform” designed to empower community developers and content creators.
To cap things off, Mojang reaffirmed that Minecraft will officially launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, further extending the sandbox giant’s impressive multi-platform reach. Altogether, it is an exceptionally vibrant and eventful era for the global community of block-builders.
Players will journey into an uncharted realm on September 29
