Thieves targeted multiple exhibitors in the business area at gamescom, stealing equipment from indie developer Ryan Laley and several other teams overnight between Thursday and Friday.

Laley, who is developing the horror title Mimic, had been demonstrating his project to attendees and business partners. When he returned to his booth on Friday morning, all of his hardware was gone.

There was a theft here last night. It wasn’t just me, but other developers as well. All our laptops have been stolen. I don’t even know what to say.

Laley noted that the loss is particularly difficult for a solo creator because replacing production hardware involves substantial out-of-pocket costs.

As a solo indie developer, this is all very expensive for me. And when something like this happens, it is incredibly upsetting. It breaks my heart.

Victims filed police reports following the incident. Laley stated that the theft effectively ended his gamescom showcase early.

Reports indicate that thieves stole at least eight laptops during the break-in.
