Miley Cyrus posted an emotional remembrance on the four-year anniversary of her single “Malibu” on Tuesday (May 11), in which she appeared to pay tribute to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. “Today is the 4 year anniversary of ‘Malibu.’ A song about a place and person that at the time I loved very much,” she wrote alongside a video with the isolated vocals from her home recording studio in which she’s singing some of the song’s wordless harmonies while rocking an “Itsmiley” sweatshirt.
“That love was reciprocated beyond what I could describe here with freedom & escapism,” she added, in a seeming allusion to her unnamed ex, who she said at the time inspired the song. “I lost that home along with many others in 2018.” Cyrus, 28, posted the clip four years to the day that “Malibu” was released in 2017 as the lead single from her Younger Now album; the song peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Miley’s Malibu home was destroyed by the raging wildfires that burned through the area in November 2018, two years after she reunited with Hemsworth. “We are just like the waves that flow back and forth/ Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning and you’re there to save me/ And I wanna thank you with all of my heart/ It’s a brand new start/ A dream come true/ In Malibu,” she sings on the dreamy track.
While Miley was looking backwards, her current remix of The Kid LAROI’s “Without You” jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart dated May 15, following the April 30 release.
