What’s better than nailing a perfect cover? Having the original artist tell you that it was simply “perfect.” That’s why Miley Cyrus was publicly freaking out on Thursday (June 24) when Cher tweeted out the highest of praise for MC’s titanic take on the mono-named star’s classic 1998 club banger “Believe.”
In an all-caps rave the day before, Cher tweeted, “I’m not usually amazed, but Pauli showed it to me & I was beyond happy!! Everyone in it is pure joy. Proud of Miley, she was perfect. Didn’t expect to wake up this morning & see something that would put a big smile on my face. Costumes makeup, hair… divine.”
Well, that was all Miley needed to hear. “I just wanted to make you PROUD!” she responded. “@Believe me! We worked hard on this number ALL FOR YOU! Our queen! Love you!” The mutual admiration exchange came after Miley posted her high-energy cover of the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit ahead of her new new Pride special, Miley Cyrus Presents Stand by You, which will exclusively stream on Peacock starting on Friday (June 25).
The drag queen-assisted take on “Believe” was filmed at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium as part of the hour-long concert special which will feature the singer sharing the stage with a number of country artists to celebrate all things LGBTQ.
Her star-studded lineup includes queer country stars such as the Brothers Osborne and Orville Peck as well as allies Maren Morris, Mickey Guyton and Little Big Town. It’s not wonder Cher was excited, as a bedazzled Cyrus stunned during the performance, matching Cher’s low vocal range while still giving it some signature Miley sparkle. A glittering cohort of drag queens snapped their way to the middle of the stage during the song, surrounding Cyrus on both sides, before breaking out into a song-and-dance that caused the entire masked audience of the Ryman to go crazy.
