From his beginnings in rap to his pop-punk triumphs, MGK now delves into rustic folk on his newest record, Lost Americana.

Dropped on August 8, the LP constitutes the first full-fledged Americana endeavor by the artist once known as Machine Gun Kelly. It succeeds a succession of hip-hop albums from his early years and two chart-topping pop-punk efforts—Tickets to My Downfall and Mainstream Sellout—each ascending to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Lost Americana hit the airwaves roughly two months after MGK unveiled the project via a Dylan-narrated trailer. “It’s a sonic map of forgotten places, a tribute to reinvention and a quest to reclaim the essence of American freedom,” the folk legend intoned in the June teaser.

Initially, fans speculated about the voiceover’s authenticity. However, during a Tonight Show guest spot days before the album’s debut, MGK affirmed it was Dylan himself. “Honestly, I’m baffled he even recognizes me,” he joked. “If I say the wrong thing, I’ll probably ruin it, so I’ll zip it and ride whatever wave Bob Dylan sends.”

Anchored by the singles “Cliché,” “Vampire Diaries” and “Miss Sunshine,” Lost Americana marks MGK’s seventh studio album. The Cleveland native’s chameleon-like genre shifts have earned him both acclaim and unwarranted criticism.

“I refuse to be boxed in by expectations,” he remarked in a recent People interview. “The real conformists are the ones criticizing me for no valid reason—my sole aim is to entertain, and that alone shouldn’t be so controversial.”
