Mastodon Pays Tribute to Brent Hinds with “Brothers to the End” at Their First Show Since His Death

Mastodon paid a moving tribute to their co-founding guitarist, Brent Hinds, during their set at the Alaska State Fair on Friday, August 22, held in Palmer’s Borealis Theatre as part of the ConocoPhillips Alaska Concert Series.

As the final chords faded, drummer and co-vocalist Brann Dailor stepped forward, his voice heavy with emotion, to honor Hinds—who tragically passed away at age 51 on August 21 following a motorcycle accident in Atlanta.

“Yesterday we lost someone who was central to our lives,” Dailor shared with the audience. “For 25 years, Brent crafted the most inventive, heartfelt music alongside us. His departure is devastating. We adored him beyond measure.”

Reflecting on their quarter-century bond, Dailor continued, “Our journey together wasn’t without its challenges, but through every high and low, we remained brothers. We created enduring music, and tonight it stands as a testament to his talent and spirit.”

He reminisced about their adventures on the road: “We formed this band, toured the globe, endured cramped vans, and yes, even beds lined with cat litter. We’ve celebrated countless shows and shared unforgettable moments with fans everywhere. That connection—that love—is why we’re here tonight.”

Concluding his homage, Dailor said, “Words fail us. We’re crushed by this loss, yet your presence made it possible for us to perform. This was for Brent. Thank you all. We’ll see you again soon.”

Hinds co-founded Mastodon in Atlanta in 2000 alongside bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and Dailor. Over 25 years, the band released nine studio albums—among them The Hunter (2011), Once More ’Round the Sun (2014) and Emperor of Sand (2017)—with the latter two reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart. In 2018, they earned a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for “Sultan’s Curse.”

In March, Mastodon announced Hinds would step back from touring; while the band described the decision as mutual, Hinds later stated he had been “kicked out.”

“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… Last night, Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we kindly ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”
