‘Magical Girl Evangelion’ series unveils trailer and release date for next film

The long-anticipated return to the Puella Magi Madoka Magica universe is finally within reach. After a series of frustrating delays, the fourth installment of this genre-defying anime saga is confirmed to hit Japanese theaters on Aug. 28.

Aniplex confirmed the premiere alongside an evocative full-length trailer. The upcoming feature, officially titled Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising, promises to be an epic conclusion to the ongoing narrative.

Debuting in 2011 as a 12-episode series from studio Shaft, Madoka Magica initially appeared to be a standard magical girl show. However, it quickly pivoted into something far more profound. By following the titular Madoka Kaname and her peers as they form pacts to combat malevolent witches, the series systematically deconstructed the lighthearted tropes established by predecessors like Sailor Moon. Its grim exploration of the inevitable despair awaiting every magical girl cemented its reputation as the Neon Genesis Evangelion of the magical girl subgenre.

Mirroring the release strategy of the Evangelion Rebuild films, the franchise launched with two recap films, Beginnings and Eternal, in 2012, followed by the original sequel, Rebellion, in 2013. While Walpurgisnacht: Rising was first teased in 2015 and formally announced in 2021, fans have weathered multiple release shifts, moving from 2024 to early 2026, and finally landing on this August date.

To recap the complex timeline: the original series finale saw Madoka ascend to a god-like state to dismantle the cycle of despair. While this created a reformed world, it effectively erased her existence from human memory, save for her dedicated friend, Homura Akemi. Homura’s tireless journey through time to save Madoka from her tragic fate defined the show’s emotional core, culminating in an ending that was as poignant as it was bittersweet.

The 2013 film Rebellion drastically altered this trajectory when Homura intervened in Madoka’s ascension, seizing divine power to craft a new reality where Madoka exists—albeit at a terrible moral price. The trailer for Walpurgisnacht: Rising indicates that the fallout from these actions will drive a climactic clash between Homura and her former allies. Though unconfirmed, it is widely speculated that this film will serve as the definitive finale to the series.
