Artist LYELL (real name Alyssa Coco) is hoping her new video for single “Potions,” on Firestarter Records, will inspire fans to find their voice and unlock their inner badass selves.
With her spine-tingling vocals and a backing band featuring writer/producer Matt Merritt on guitar and drummer Levi Bennett, LYELL is bringing her unique story to a rock scene badly in need of worthy anti-heroes.
“Performing is such a huge part of who I am,” she tells Billboard. “I’ve always connected with Dorothy and Alice [from The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland] because they were in control of their own narrative. They weren’t waiting for fucking Prince Charming to come and save them.”
LYELL’s own narrative caught the attention of producer JT Daly, who immediately saw a star in the making, and began working with the band in early 2020.
“‘Potions’ really stood out to me,” he tells Billboard. “Screaming, ‘I’m losing my mind’ over and over after the last year we all had seemed really cathartic.”
