Lucy Dacus has an important message for her Texas-based concertgoers after the state’s new abortion law — the nation’s most restrictive — went into effect on Wednesday (Sept. 1).
The singer-songwriter announced on Twitter Thursday (Sept. 2), “All the money I make at our upcoming shows in Texas will be going towards abortion funds jsyk, if you’re not cool with that don’t come.”
With the Supreme Court refusing to step in to block the measure, abortion rights advocates fear that the new Texas law is the most significant effort to date by anti-abortion advocates to reverse the landmark 1973 Roe V. Wade decision that legalized abortion. The law, which does not make any exceptions for rape or incest and very few for health reasons, basically means that abortion is effectively banned in the second most-populous state in the country.
The new Texas measure is so wide-ranging that it gives private citizens the right to sue abortion providers and anyone who helps a woman get an abortion, down to someone who gives a woman a ride to a clinic or provides any financial assistance to get that abortion; the private citizens who bring the suits don’t have to have any connection to the people they are suing, according to NPR. To aid in this effort, Texas Right to Life has set up what it’s calling a “whistleblower” site where citizens can upload anonymous tips about people they believe are violating the law.
Dacus also informed her fans to bring extra money to her Houston and San Antonio shows — which are respectively slated for Sept. 18 at White Oak Music Hall and Sept. 20 at Paper Tiger — for the donation to the abortion funds, which she’s still organizing. “If you are cool with that (and are vaccinated) Austin and Dallas are sold out, but Houston and San Antonio are not, come thru and bring extra $ cause I’m gonna figure out a donation situation,” she concluded.
