Lizzo Claims Social Media Algorithms Are ‘Destroying the Music Industry’ and Hindering Her Album Promotion

Lizzo is voicing her growing frustration with current social media marketing trends, arguing that modern algorithmic shifts are severely hindering her ability to effectively promote her upcoming album, Bitch.

In a candid video shared on TikTok this past Tuesday, the singer-songwriter clarified that she isn’t just venting personal grievances. Instead, she is highlighting a widespread systemic issue affecting artists across the industry. She emphasized that she is speaking up on behalf of her peers, noting that many industry insiders have privately echoed her concerns regarding how these platforms operate today.

“The way social media is now dictated by algorithms is detrimental to the music industry,” Lizzo explained. “Because these platforms often prioritize content out of chronological order, the average listener is frequently left in the dark about when new music is actually being released.”

Reflecting on the recent past, the Grammy-winning artist noted, “Just a few years ago, we relied on chronological feeds to stay informed. Music marketing is intrinsically tied to social media, but when the algorithm dictates what we see—and when we see it—the ability to generate genuine hype and ensure fans know an album is coming has essentially evaporated.”

Lizzo admitted that even she struggles to keep track of projects from artists she admires due to these fractured feeds. She pointed out that her own dedicated fan base, which includes over 280,000 followers on a private page, often misses her updates because her posts fail to penetrate the algorithmic barrier.

In the post’s caption, the entrepreneur behind Yitty also took a firm stance on the deeper societal implications of these platforms, adding, “Don’t even get me started on the racism and fatphobia embedded in the algorithm.”

This critique arrives just ahead of the June 5 release of Bitch. The highly anticipated project follows her 2022 hit Special—which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200—and features previously released tracks such as the title song and the single “Don’t Make Me Love U.”

Beyond her music, Lizzo has remained in the spotlight recently, appearing on The Roast of Kevin Hart and sitting down with Gayle King on CBS Mornings. During her television appearance, she addressed ongoing legal challenges involving former backup dancers, reiterating her denial of all allegations regarding workplace conduct.

“I am choosing to fight this case because I know the truth,” she told King. “Settling would be the easy way out, but I’m standing my ground because the reality of the situation is far less sensational than the headlines suggest.”
