It turns out the secret weapon for a truly memorable roast is a well-timed flute solo.
Armed with her flute and accompanied by a “Krew of Kevins,” Lizzo made a surprise appearance this past Sunday (May 10) at the grand finale of the Netflix is a Joke Fest: The Roast of Kevin Hart. The musician led a troop of performers dressed as various iterations of Hart onto the stage, playing her flute to Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle” while she and the lookalikes showcased some impressive choreography.
“Come on, work it, Kevin!” the singer cheered as a performer dressed in a chicken suit broke into a dance routine, leaving the real Kevin Hart visibly stunned.
After putting down her instrument, Lizzo took the podium to deliver her own comedic jabs. She seized the moment to highlight a shared experience between the two stars.
“Kevin and I both deal with constant criticism about our size,” she remarked. “We understand that struggle. But I have the ability to shed some weight—you, on the other hand, are stuck being short,” she quipped, laughing as she looked down at Hart.
Lizzo wasn’t the only music star to take part in the event. Usher kicked off the evening with a scathing parody of his chart-topping hit “Burn,” reworking the lyrics to playfully dismantle his friendship with the comedian.
“Tell me why I should bother with this fake friendship/ ‘Cause we aren’t laughing, Kevin/ It keeps happening, Kevin/ Plus, you’re usually off filming some nonsense,” Usher crooned, ignoring Hart’s bewildered reaction.
Teyana Taylor, fresh from her Visionary Award win at Billboard’s Women in Music event, also joined the lineup to take aim at Hart. “Honestly, roasting you feels beneath me,” Taylor declared. “But I suppose that’s a foreign concept to you, considering there is absolutely nothing that is beneath you.”
Taylor didn’t hold back, weaving in references to Hart’s filmography: “I would never say anything as cutting as, ‘I starred in One Battle After Another, while Kevin’s career has been one box-office bomb after another.’”
